چکیده
Eagon, R. G. (University of Georgia, Athens). Bacterial dissimilation of l-fucose and l-rhamnose. J. Bacteriol. 82:548-550. 1961.-Of 33 microorganisms screened for the ability to utilize the methylpentoses, l-fucose and l-rhamnose, 18 species utilized one or both methylpentoses. The majority of the bacterial species capable of utilizing these methylpentoses did so by isomerization of the methylpentoses to the corresponding ketoses followed by phosphorylation of the ketoses. However, the existence of a second pathway is suggested by results obtained from Sarcina lutea, Bacillus megaterium, Gaffkya tetragena, and Rhizobium leguminosarum.

Cross-induction of the L-fucose system by L-rhamnose in Escherichia coli.
Dissimilation of L-fucose as a carbon and energy source by Escherichia coli involves a permease, an isomerase, a kinase, and an aldolase encoded by the fuc regulon at minute 60.2. Utilization of L-rhamnose involves a similar set of proteins encoded by the rha operon at minute 87.7. Both pathways lead to the formation of L-lactaldehyde and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. A common NAD-linked oxidored...
متن کاملMetabolism of L-fucose and L-rhamnose in Escherichia coli: aerobic-anaerobic regulation of L-lactaldehyde dissimilation.
L-Lactaldehyde is a branching point in the metabolic pathway of L-fucose and L-rhamnose utilization. Under aerobic conditions, L-lactaldehyde is oxidized to L-lactate by the enzyme lactaldehyde dehydrogenase, while under anaerobic conditions, L-lactaldehyde is reduced to L-1,2-propanediol by the enzyme propanediol oxidoreductase. Aerobic growth on either of the methyl pentoses induces a lactald...
متن کاملInvolvement of a Bacterial Microcompartment in the Metabolism of Fucose and Rhamnose by Clostridium phytofermentans
BACKGROUND Clostridium phytofermentans, an anaerobic soil bacterium, can directly convert plant biomass into biofuels. The genome of C. phytofermentans contains three loci with genes encoding shell proteins of bacterial microcompartments (BMC), organelles composed entirely of proteins. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS One of the BMC loci has homology to a BMC-encoding locus implicated in th...
متن کاملMetabolism of L-rhamnose by Escherichia coli. I. L-rhamnose isomerase.
The methyl pentose, L-rhamnose, is known to be fermented by a number of bacteria, but little information is available concerning the metabolic steps involved in this fermentation. An indication of the pathway of rhamnose metabolism was provided by the finding of Kluyver and Schnellen (1937) that propylene glycol was a major product in the fermentation by Bacillus rhamnosifermentans. Since 50 pe...

Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of Legionnaires disease, and related organisms have previously been characterized primarily by conventional bacteriological methods, DNA-DNA hybridization, antigenic analysis, and fatty acid analysis. By capillary gas chromatographic analysis for carbohydrates, we have shown that muramic acid and glucosamine, characteristic markers of bacterial cell w...
